SILVERADO RESORT IN NAPA VALLEY

Silverado Resort has become our favorite place to escape during this short time we've lived here. As you can see, the grounds are gorgeous, service super-friendly and the rooms feel homey and warm.

Both times we've stayed here we had a view of the quiet golf course and a huge balcony. The stand-in shower is huge (a big plus!), bed comfortable, the full kitchen comes fully equipped and the real fireplace adds a nice touch. We love fireplaces since our house in New Jersey has two of them, so whenever we have the opportunity to use a fireplace, we will.

Below you'll see few photos of our Premium Cottage Suite. These suites have been recently renovated so in order to get the big shower and gorgeous kitchen, book the Premium option.
Silverado Resort and Spa features two 18-hole PGA golf courses, bocce courts, 10 tennis courts, restaurant, bar, spa and fitness center as well as 10 outdoor pools spread throughout its 1,200 acres. There's also so many wineries just a couple of minutes drive away, so you are guaranteed not to get bored. Oh, and Trader Joe's and Whole Foods are both about 10 minutes away so you can get your healthy snacks and foods.

BETTER COCKTAILS: POMBUCHA COSMO

For Thanksgiving I wanted to create a festive cocktail that had a twist of healthy things in it, like fresh squeezed juices and some bubbles from kombucha. Pressed Juicery just happened to have $5 sale on their juices so after a nightshift I walked to one of their stores and got a green juice (perfect light breakfast) + couple of pomegranate-persimmon juices for the cocktail. Here's the recipe:

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE 2015

It's time for my annual Holiday Gift Guide.  We won't be doing much shopping this year because we are moving in January again and need to focus our funds to that, but here are few suggestions to those looking for last minute gift ideas.

This book is amazing for all your DIY peeps and home cooks that want to create gifts that are kind, eco-conscious and budget-friendly. From baking mixes you can create, package, and label yourself, to gift baskets, preserves, liquors, and more. Also get an extra copy for yourself so next year you can make all your gifts straight out of this book!

Jing Ai products are formulated with the finest-possible USDA certified- organic ingredients including botanical and flower oils, natural mineral pigments, coconut oil and is 100% gluten & cruelty free. All their containers, pencils and tubes are made with recyclable materials. Comprised of natural fibers, paperboard is recyclable, biodegradable and compostable and printed with soy ink. The bronzer smells like roses (scent actually comes from organic rose oil)and gives you a beautiful, healthy glow.

Vitamin and mineral supplements are a good way to ensure you're getting what you need even when you haven't been too good about your diet. I just personally started using the HealthPak in the name of product testing and quite like it! It comes in pre-packed daily AM and PM doses (for 56 days!)of balanced mixture of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to support the entire body, so it is way more than a multivitamin. Perfect gift for someone looking to kickstart a new, healthier way of life.

Jade is said to be the best yoga mat by many, especially yoga teachers love it, and my yoga studio uses them exclusively. One important factor when comparing mats is how well the fabric supports you because you don't want your hands to slip while holding down dog (especially at hot yoga where you sweat a ton). Jade definitely wins in the grip department because I don't even have to pull out my Yogitoes when using Jade.
Glass is one of the greenest materials on the planet and it is 100% recyclable and safe. Unlike plastic, glass is free of BPA and other harmful chemicals, which can leach into your drink. Using reusable glass bottle also benefits the environment. And I feel kind of cool drinking from it instead of crappy plastic bottle. :)

I'm sure lot of people are planning on doing something healthy after all the holidays and 3-day juice cleanse is the perfect start for it. I did it last summer and felt amazing afterwards. Urban Remedy's juices are organic and absolutely delicious. Read about my experience here.

THANKSGIVING IN NAPA VALLEY

Silverado Resort Napa Valley main building
This post is long overdue, but with the rest of the December holidays upon us I decided to show what we had for our Thanksgiving dinner in Napa Valley. The easy option would've been to dine at the resort we stayed at, but since I had an itch to cook, we prepped all the foods at home, stored in oven-safe glass storage containers and then warmed them up at our suite's kitchen. Silverado Resort, which is our favorite, has full kitchens in their suites, so getting ready for dinner was quick and painless. We even played a round of golf right before the sun going down. Then we had a little adventure when being the only people at the course at that late hour we got lost coming back. It was so dark (the course nor the cart had lights), freezing and our golf cart was running out of gas, and we had no idea how to get back to where we started from. We drove around and around and then finally saw the lights of the main building. Whew. Made it back alive.
healthy kombucha and persimmon juice cocktail from Pressed Juicery
Back at the room we started the fireplace, turned up the heating and poured some healthier cocktails made from cranberry kombucha, pomegranate-persimmon juice and a little bit of vodka.
vegan thanksgiving plate of brussels sprouts, sweet potato casserole, crispy smashed potato cakes, garlic avocado aioli, shredded kale salad with pomegranate and crispy dried onions
For dinner we had:
For dessert we enjoyed apple pie from Whole Foods that required just a quick 20-minutes in the oven and was ready to be devoured.
lemon lavender activated charcoal lemonade and persimmon pomegranate juice
To get the morning started off on the right note I prepared and brought some extra pomegranate-persimmon juice, lemon-lavender-activated charcoal lemonade and a homemade green smoothie. Say what?! Winning!
And of course, there was some leftovers for late breakfast to keep us satisfied for the ride back home to San Francisco.

5 FAVORITES OF THE WEEK

golden gate bridge san francisco
San Francisco. What a 3 weeks it has been. I've been working overnight shifts and the first 2 weeks was fine. I was kind of excited to have 8 hours at night to do my own thing and get paid for not really working, but the last week was just horrible. I did nothing but sleep all day after getting home, woke up cranky, hangry, unenergized, then ate, stayed up couple of hours and then went to nap for few hours again until it was time to leave for work at 10.15pm. I'm not built to work at night, especially this time of the year. You miss all the sun when you go to sleep at 8am and wake up at 4-5pm. Not good for the soul.  I hope that I will never have to do another graveyard shift again.

If I thought San Francisco was grimy and gritty during daytime, check it out during the hours of 1am-4am. I've never seen as many prostitutes, addicts, shady people and homeless people going back and forth the street in front of my hotel. We actually lock the doors at 1am and won't open them until about 5.30am. Last thing you want to deal with is a meth-head in your lobby while you are all by yourself. San Francisco is one of the most realest places I've ever lived in. It's exciting, pretty, ugly, super laid-back, but most of all, unpretentious. I love it.
green smoothie with bee pollen vihersmoothie siitepoly
Green smoothies. Waking up hangry after fasting from 7pm-4pm (I can't eat at night, I just don't get hungry) I made sure I had pre-made foods in the fridge I could just warm up or shake up and eat, like smoothies and soups. This stopped me from eating junk while on that crazy hungry, tired and angry mood. I was like a bear waking from hibernation.
cancer preventing red cabbage cole slaw i batch cooked
Cabbage. Especially red cabbage. I've been eating cabbage for days because it's one of my favorite veggies. I love the crunch and the taste so instead of cooking it every time, I decided to make a big batch of slaw together with some sweet onion, green bell peppers and carrots. Red cabbage is great for your eye health, cancer prevention, it's filled with fiber, Vitamin C (1 cup of chopped red cabbage has 56% of the recommended daily intake) as well as Vitamin K.
clementines and pomegranate for healthy snack winter season
Fruits. I've been craving for fruits lately and even my cavity filled wisdom tooth screaming for help has not stopped me (ok, I seriously need to get that pulled out asap).
my favorite teas hibiscus, kava stress relief, raspberry ginger digestive vitality, cranberry probiotic tea and everyday detox tea
Tea-time. This is one of my favorite rituals in the morning, and sometimes at night. I did not drink any coffee during my 3 weeks of overnight shifts because I was afraid how my body would react (I'm quite sensitive to coffee). So I brought lots of herbal tea with me and drank them all night long. In the morning on my way back home I had Kava tea which works really strongly on me. It really relaxes me a lot and gives me nice, deep sleep.

PLAN A WEEK OF SALADS

Here's an example how I keep healthy eats available for the work week. These are salads, but you can do the same with whatever you have planned to eat that week, like stir-fries, veggie bowls, tacos and so on.
The plan:

Sunday (or any day you pick as your prep day)

-Prepare and store beans for salads. Cook quinoa or other grains.

-Wash, spin and pack hearty greens such as kale or collards into produce bags (these keep things fresh longer).

-Cut carrots, slice radishes, prepare other firm juicy root veggies and pop them into sealable glass/plastic containers with a little cold water.

-Bake, cool and pack up crunchy nut toppings, chickpeas and croutons.

-Make a salad for dinner. Make extra and pack up your lunchtime tote first before eating your fill. Avoid the sog by keeping the dressing on the side to add when you ready to eat.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday

Make your dinner salads with the remix of those ready-to-use ingredients such as beans, seasoned tofu or nuts, croutons and greens and fresh veggies, roasted chickpeas and ready to eat proteins you prepped over the weekend. Make a double batch of your favorite recipe and before serving yourself, pack half in a to-go-container for next day's lunch.

Thursday or Friday night

Try planning two or three salads, one for Sunday and one or two more for early in the week, and take those first steps towards building healthy habits. If you have Friday night plans do your shopping Thursday night.

The weekend

Big shopping trip! Purchase produce, grains and pantry items.
Stock up on more green bags or containers for storing ingredients.
Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning make a steamy soup or fluffy pancakes. You’ve eaten enough salads!

Other tips:

-Cut oranges and lemons into wedges and store in the fridge.

-Have hummus and healthy crackers around for snacks (I love gluten-free Mary's Gone Crackers!)

-As a general rule for prepping, try to use up the salad components within five days.

-Creamy dressings (like avocado based ones) are best eaten within 3 days and vinaigrettes can go for almost a week.

-Tofu, Tempeh and Seitan once seasoned and cooked should be eaten within 2 days.

-Beans, cooked quinoa and other grains are best eaten within 2-3 days.

Warm Ginger Pear Smoothie

I prefer all my drinks room-temperature or warm (including water), probably because I'm Vata according to Ayurveda and almost always feeling cold rather than warm. I use lots of warming spices like cinnamon, cayenne, cardamon and turmeric (in cooking, smoothies as well as with my morning tea), but never thought to slightly warm up my smoothie before. This recipe for Warm Ginger Pear Smoothie is great for breakfast or snack during the colder season.

MY 6 STEPS TO MEAL PLANNING

I've learned in my 30-something years in this life that planning is the key to eating healthy. Sometimes I slip (like just two weeks ago when I started a new job and did not plan my lunches), but I always go back to my planning ritual.

I pick a day of the week when I'm off, like Saturday, and that's also the day there's the farmers market so I can stock on fresh produce. For most people with normal jobs the planning and shopping day will be Sunday. Grocery shopping is the single most important thing when it comes to staying on track with a healthy eating plan.

3 month update from San Francisco

I can't believe I've been living here just for 3 months! Feels like a year! What I love about San Francisco: pretty hiking grounds, mountains, public transportation, space to breath, mild weather, sun, amazing Asian foods, sourdough bread, perfect distances for little road trips and overall "laidbackness". I've just started working part-time in a luxury hotel to meet new people, get extra cash and get out of the house. Super cute little place where everyone has been very welcoming and nice. And laid-back.
My go-to yoga studio is Yoga to the People. It is huge, bright, lofty, donation-based and right next to the Bart-station. Also looking forward to testing out Laughing Lotus yoga studio and trying barre for the first time ever. It's good to expand our horizons.
And of course I've found few places to get my green juice fix. So far I've tried Pressed Juicery, Project Juice and Sidewalk Juice. Too bad there's not one near my job so I have to bring homemade smoothies with me to work until one opens up. I'm working on my food-for-you guide to San Francisco where I've collected my favorite healthy spots in this city See my NYC guide here.
Our lease ends in December and they are raising our rent a lot if we decide to renew it, so wish us luck finding another place before the year is over. Not the easiest task in this sky-high rental market. Follow more of my West Coast daily musings here.
