AFTER THE STORM

First of all thank you for all your messages and comments. We are alright. Our apartment did not flood since there was really not that much rain involved with the storm, our property did not occur any damages and we didn't lose power even everyone else around us did (80% of our town). My sister-in-law's family in our hundred year old Victorian house is still without power (and it's cold now). We did provide them with generator so they can heat the house and charge their cellphones and laptops at least. We were very lucky. There's still no public transportation and my job in West Village has no electricity so I'll be staying home this entire week. I edited my hurricane report and added after the storm images from our town (you can skip to 1:54 if you saw the first part of it already).

HURRICANE SANDY VIDEO REPORT

There was no public transportation whatsoever today and husband didn't drive to work so we all stayed home and waited for Sandy. And waited some more. And then some more. My yoga studio cancelled all their classes after 9.30am so I was a bit bummed about that, because it meant a long day inside four walls. Then I got an idea that we should shoot our own weather report since I was so inspired about it after watching NBC and Weather Channel for hours Sunday and Monday... So here you go! :)
There will be no public transportation tomorrow Tuesday either and that means another day at home. I reeeeally hope my yoga studio will be open then. I have until Wednesday to complete my 21 in 31 yoga challenge so I need to take some classes asap. And I need to get out of the house! I might bring my camera with me in the morning to take a look at what damage Sandy has caused in our neighborhood. Hopefully it will be minimal. Winds are heavy right now at 11.30pm as I'm writing this. So expect a hurricane report number two!

PREPARING FOR HURRICANE SANDY

As Sandy approaches we're doing the minimum to get ready if things get bad. Our main concern is flooding since this apartment has known to flood in the past, although the managing company says they've fixed it with a brand new sump pump. But we'll see how much water it can handle. We live right by a little river, which might become a huge river. Luckily we are on top of a hill so if it floods we'll be the last apartment it'll reach.
Today we ran to the dollar store to get few more candles, batteries for the radio and flashlight and some water in case we lose power. I'm not sure if my job plans to be open tomorrow, haven't heard anything from them, so I'll just wait until the morning and see what the officials are saying. I won't risk anything for that job... Plus my job is just two blocks from Hudson River that might flood as well. Plus they're closing down pretty much all transportation options we have so my only way to travel would be my husband's car.
Our fruit needs I took care already on Thursday when I received this huge delivery. Yum!
Our Brita-tank provides us water for at least two days and we got some bottled water as well.
We also secured our patio furniture and the grill just in case things get very windy.
Saaandyyyy, we're waiting for you....

Hurrikaani Sandy lähestyy meitä pikkuhiljaa ja olemme tehneet minimin valmistuaksemme siihen että asiat menevät huonosti. Suurin huolenaiheemme on tulviminen, koska asuntomme on tulvinut aiemminkin (edellisen vuokralaisen aikana), vaikka asuntoyhtiö onkin vakuuttanut, että ongelma on korjattu uuden pumpun avulla.

GET YOUR PINK ON

Last week I attended a fun event organized by Reebok and DSW at Studio 450 in midtown West, almost by the river. The evening included healthy snacks, freebies, celebrity appearance and a funky dance class with dance fitness guru Ilyse Baker. Vanessa Hudgens danced with us for a little while and Brandy was going to come hang out, but cancelled last minute (booo!).
Last two photos by Reebok, all others mine
I was surprised how well I was able to follow and remember the short choreography Ilyse taught us. Camera crew shooting us the entire time was putting a little pressure on me. Especially when the camera man was kneeling down on the floor in front of me shooting me from the most unflattering angle. But I think I did well. Can't wait for the video to come out!
Enjoy your weekend dears!

MEATLESS MONDAY: ZESTY QUINOA WITH VEGGIES & CASHEWS

Last weekend I was in a mood for something high-protein (maybe because of all this yoga I've been doing) and found a great recipe using Whole Food's recipe app. I love the feature that let's you put in the items you have in your cabinet and it finds recipes based on what you have on hand. I had quinoa and broccoli and this is the recipe I found. As usual I modified a bit.

Of all the whole grains, quinoa has the highest protein content, so it's perfect for vegetarians and vegans. Quinoa provides all 9 essential amino acids, making it a complete protein. Quinoa is a gluten-free and cholesterol-free.

Zesty Quinoa with Veggies and Cashews

1/2 cup sundried tomatoes(did not have. Used more vegetables instead)
1 cup vegetable broth
1 cup finely chopped red onion
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
3/4 cup dry white wine
1/4 cup lemon juice
1 cup uncooked quinoa
2 cups small broccoli florets(I used also bell pepper & tomato)
1/2 cup roasted cashew pieces
2 green onions, thinly sliced

Soak sundried tomatoes in hot water to cover for 15 minutes to soften them, then drain and chop. Bring 1/2 cup water to a simmer in a medium pot over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic and cook for 5 minutes. Add chopped sundried tomatoes , broth, wine and lemon juice and bring to a boil. Stir in quinoa. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 20 minutes.

Arrange broccoli (and other veggies if you used them)on top of quinoa, cover and simmer for an additional 10 minutes. Remove from heat and toss gently to combine. Serve garnished with cashews and green onions.

Huomio: ohjeessa on käytetty mittayksikkonä kuppia. 1 kuppi=2,36dl. Itse en hirveän tarkasti määriä noudata vaan heitän sen verran aineksia sekaan kun hyvältä tuntuu. Ja aina ihan hyvää tulee. :)

Quinoaa kasviksien ja cashewn kanssa

1/2 kuppia aurinkokuivattuja tomaatteja (en käyttänyt. Lisäsin enemmän kasviksia sen sijaan)
1 kuppi kasvislientä
1 kuppi hienonnettua punasipulia
3 valkosipulinkynttä, hienonnettuna
3/4 kuppia kuivaa valkoviiniä
1/4 kuppia sitruunan mehu

WEEKEND IS HERE!

I'm sitting in the dark at 12 noon, two candles burning as well as an incense. I'm considering lighting the fireplace as well so it would get warmer and I could take off this thick bathrobe. It's dark outside and raining cats and dogs. I woke up around 8am when husband jumped out of bed and ran outside to check if it was our car that had alarm going off. It wasn't. I got up too, wandered around the apartment half-asleep, drank some water with lemon to make sure I wasn't dehydrated since I did hot yoga last night. Cleaned the cats litter-box, gave them food and made myself a pitcher of green smoothie with apple, banana, pear, swiss chard, plum, greens powder, hemp protein powder and spirulina.
These photos are from Reebok/DSW event "Get your pink on". I'm waiting for some more professional photos and a video of us dancing so I can share this fun evening with you
I skipped the noon yoga class because of this heavy rain, but I'm committed to taking the 4.30pm class. I was also going to take the 7pm Yin yoga & meditation, but when I tried to sign up it was already fully booked. Darn. The plan for domestic stuff for today is some laundry (I got tons of towels and stinky yoga gear to wash), baking mini vegan cupcakes and cooking delicious dinner before husband gets home from work (I found a recipe I'm dying to try so if it's a success I'll share it here).
Enjoy the weekend! Do something fun!

Mahtavaa viikonloppua! Tehkää jotakin hauskaa!

PINK INDIAN DRESS

My yoga studio is located next to an Indian store that sells clothes, oils, incense, jewelry and decorative items from India and the other day before class I peeked in. I saw so many things I wanted, but luckily I didn't bring much money since I was going to a yoga class and not shopping. I had $10 in my pocket and from their clearance section I found this pretty pink dress that was exactly the amount I had. The owner of the store, an elder Indian man, told me that he's had the store in that exact same spot for 37 years. That's quite impressive. I'll be sure to return for the oils and incense. We go through a lot of incense in our household. There's one burning right now too. And maybe some of the pretty clothes as well (although I'm still not supposed to be buying any new clothes...). Me and India just share such a special relationship which is why I love everything from there. Wish I could travel there soon again...

SUNNY WEEKEND

Last weekend was beautiful, sunny and Sunday was incredibly warm as well.
I drank tons of green smoothies with plenty of fresh organic kale in them. And I got so many delicious snacks from Trader Joe's such as cashews, banana chips, dried pineapple, plantain chips and caramel pop corn.
And I didn't skip any yoga classes! Way to go! Here I am on Sunday full of excitement before class. :)
While the days are getting shorter and darker I've been nesting and making our little apartment little cozier.  We've lit up the fireplace few times already and candles have been burning non-stop.
Hopefully next weekend we'll have the chance to go pumpkin picking. Last year we weren't so lucky...
Anyways, I hope you'll have a great week! Enjoy the fall!
“Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.”  ― Albert Camus

Join runsaasti vihreitä smoothieita tuoreen luomulehtikaalin kera. Ja kävin ostamassa paljon pikkupurtavaa lempikaupastani Trader Joesta, kuten cashewpähkinoita, banaanilastuja, kuivattuja ananaksia, plantain-lastuja (mikä suomeksi???) ja karamellipopcornia.Enkä jätttänyt väliin yhtään joogatuntia! Way to go!

Päivät lyhenevät täälläkin päin maailmaa ja olen viihdyttänyt itseäni tekemällä kotiamme viihtyisämmäksi. Olemme laittaneet takkaan tulen jo muutaman kerran ja kynttilät palavat kämpässämme melkein non-stop. Toivottavasti ensi viikonloppuna meillä on mahdollisuus mennä poimimaan kurpitsa. Viime vuonna emme olleet niin onnekkaita...

YOGA CHALLENGE WEEKLY REPORT 1

I started my 21 in 31-yoga challenge last Monday and so far I'm happy with my abilities at class, but I'm not happy with how I sometimes make excuses not to go to the class. During my first week I did only four classes instead of the six that I had planned. That's not very good. That means that this week I got some catching up to do.

Plan is to take class Mon, Tue, Wed, Fri, Sat, and then Sunday do a double. We're allowed two doubles during the challenge and Sundays are the perfect days for those because after the regular hot power yoga class you have restorative yoga which is mainly stretching and breathing. Great way to end the week anyway.

My eating has been pretty bad, I do not eat enough and healthy enough nor do I drink enough water. I need to establish an eating plan to follow because what I see here is not good at all. We are offered so called family meal at work at 4pm every day, but there's always meat on everything so all I can usually eat is some salad and rice... And Sunday was definitely the low point of my week... Ooops.

Here's few good tips for the month from one of our teachers:
  • Consider that you are going to need to hydrate constantly. I recommend the Electro Mix to add to your water. Made by Emergen-C, it is in a green packet & contains Potassium, Magnesium, Manganese, Calcium & Chromium and NO SUGAR.
  • Try to drink at least 12 glasses of water a day. But stop about 1 – 1.5 hours before class.
  • Make sure you are getting 8 hours of sleep a night. Your body & mind will need this.
  • Keep a journal or blog during the 21 days...you will love going back to read how each day & class is different.
Week 2 has started and I'm already doing much better!

“The one message of all saints and sages is the message of love. Ahimsa is the highest of all traits found in the mind, speech and actions of all perfected souls. There is only one religion- the religion of love, or peace. There is only one message, the message of unconditional and universal love. Ahimsa is the supreme duty of a Yogi. If you are established in Ahimsa, you have attained all virtues. All virtues spring forth from Ahimsa.
Ahimsa may appear to merely imply non-killing. But, non- injury is not merely non-killing. The true meaning of Ahimsa is non-harming in thought, word, and action. The absence of causing any harm to any living creature. Ahimsa is true strength. No Self-realization is possible without Ahimsa.”
