PHILLY RESTAURANTS

Square 1682 Spontaneous Vegetable Tasting Menu from top left: goat cheese and tomato salad with beet puree and pine nuts, delicious creamy Indian spiced soup, vegetable quiche with red and green sauce and some kind of vegetable pocket with pureed something inside (ha! I could never be a food critic because I can't never remember what I ate! I guess I need to take notes next time...)

This trip was truly a culinary experience for the both of us. Husband got all the seafood he can eat (loves seafood) and I got all the veggies I can eat. Unfortunately in the restaurant world these two don't often meet. We rarely go to seafood restaurants because they usually have nothing for me to eat, expect maybe one little salad. I'm also very afraid of the cross-contamination factor due to being very allergic to fish.

On our first night in town we went to the Hotel Palomar's contemporary and chic Square 1682 that we had seen during our last visit to Philly. Located in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood of Center City, the restaurant is Philadelphia's first LEED-certified green eatery and bar. I was, of course, impressed by the $45 6-course Spontaneous Vegetable Tasting Menu ($75 with wine pairings).

I love tasting menus, because I really prefer to try little portions of different flavors and textures instead of a big plate of one thing. See above and below the 6-dishes I got to sample. Carnivore husband tried each one of them as well and was enjoying them. Slowly, but surely I'm turning him into a plant-eater...
Mango sorbet and blackberry gelato with fresh strawberries... Yum!
Yup, we got two desserts. Well, actually three since they made husband also a plate of sorbet and gelato as a bonus ( I guess they liked us so much)
The next evening we tried a seafood restaurant, Devon Seafood Grill located right off the Rittenhouse Square Park. This was husband's choice and I was happily surprised that they offered a full vegetarian menu for us herbivores. I started with a heirloom tomato salad topped with awesome basil sorbet(!!!). I love heirloom tomatoes! So much tastier compared to the regular old tomatoes. I also had their bruchetta that we shared and for main course I got very flavorful grilled vegetable platter which was very simple and real. Husband had some clams and calamari and fish, that's all I know. We sure were full after all that food and took a nice walk around the Rittenhouse Square Park to Capogiro for some dairy-free gelatos. While walking to the hotel we bumped into husband's high school friend and his wife who were having drinks at a bar patio and joined them. I love random encounters. Except with exes...

Olin tietenkin vaikuttunut 45 dollaria maksavasta kuuden ruokalajin Vegetable Tasting Menusta ($75 viinien kera). Lihansyöjä mieheni kokeili jokaista annoksistani ja tykkäsi paljon. Hitaasti, mutta varmasti olen kääntämässä häntä kasvissyöjäksi...

Seuraavana iltana kokeilimme kalaravintolaa. Devon Seafood Grill sijaitsee aivan Rittenhouse Square Parkin vieressä. Rakastan satunnaisia kohtaamisia.
